HEALTHCARE
Foremost among the many concerns an
individual has in considering a
relocation is health care. "Access to"
and "quality of' care are very important
for individuals, families and
businesses.
Fortunately, Jersey City residents
are blessed with access to the most
modern, sophisticated procedures, at
several health care facilities within the
city. Each of these institutions are
known for the excellent quality of care
that is provided. All of these health
care facilities are working hard to build
on their current strengths so that
Jersey City residents will always have a
wide array of excellent choices when it
comes to health care.
One of the most exciting changes in
Jersey City health care in recent years
is the development of the Grand Jersey
project. It is a 420-bed state of-the-art
medical facility currently being
developed on a 13-acre site along the
waterfront.
At a cost of over $200 million, it is
the second-largest public facility
project ever built in New Jersey and
when completed in 1998, it will
provide employment for more than
2,000 people. The facility will be
operated by the Jersey City Medical
Center.

Greenville Hospital
1825 Kennedy Boulevard
Jersey City, NJ 07305
201-541-6100
These two hospitals are the Jersey City-based divisions of the new Liberty Health Care System, which seeks to develop and provide the services necessary to make Hudson County self-sufficient in all areas of health
care. Toward that end, Liberty is
acquiring the technology and the
personnel to provide state-of-the-art
care, and placing those resources at
facilities where the greatest numbers
of people will be able to use them most
efficiently.
Jersey City Medical Center is the
only designated Level II Trauma
Center in the county. That means that it
is qualified to provide the highest
levels of emergency medical treatment
to trauma victims, and is truly in a class
by itself in providing those services.
JCMC is also the only designated
Perinatal Center in the county. As such,
it provides the type of critical
treatment to mothers and babies that
often could mean the difference
between celebrating a child's birth or
crying about what might have been.
As the major teaching hospital in
Hudson County, the medical center has
a full time staff of over 100 physicians
in virtually every specialty. As teaching
physicians, these medical doctors are
up to the minute in the latest advances
within their specialties.
They are also supported with the latest
advances in medical technology. Jersey
City Medical Center, also has more
than 300 other physicians
board-certified to practice there.
Greenville Hospital has, a staff of
more than 150
physicians and offers
the community 86 beds and access to
many of the services offered by the
Liberty Health System.
Christ Hospital

Since 1874, Christ Hospital has been
meeting the needs of Jersey City and
Hudson County residents with quality
medical treatment, provided in an environment of loving care and concern
for the patient.
With 402 beds and a staff of more
than 350 highly-trained physicians,
Christ Hospital is able to offer a wide
variety of both in-patient and out-
patient treatments. Most notable is
the Cancer Treatment Center that
provides diagnostic, surgical and radiation services to over 2,000 patients
annually. It is the only accredited community hospital cancer program in
Hudson County.
The hospital also sponsors a school
of nursing, and community-based
services such as the Center for Health
Awareness and the Community
Mental Health Center.
The entire staff of Christ Hospital is
completely committed to the hospital's
mission to "heal the sick" and to keep
the community well. That's why
they're involved in programs at every
level throughout the community.
Franciscan Health System of New Jersey
One McWilliams Place
Jersey City, NJ 01302
201-114-8900
In 1985, St. Mary Hospital in
Hoboken joined with St. Francis
Hospital in Jersey City to form the
Franciscan Health System of New
Jersey. Together, these hospitals
make a significant contribution to
the health care options available to
area residents.
St. Mary Hospital was founded in
1863 by the Franciscan Sisters of
the Poor. Today it is a 328-bed acute
care hospital with a teaching
program for physicians specializing
in Family Practice. The hospital
also operates the Community
Mental Health Center, Project
Cope, a special in-patient
psychiatric service for children, and
the Giant Steps program for
adolescent substance abusers.
St. Francis Hospital was founded
in 1864, by the same order of nuns.
Today it is a 243-bed acute care
hospital with an adjacent School of
Nursing and Day Care Center
occupying five buildings on 2.2
acres in downtown Jersey City.
Both hospitals are affiliated with
FAITH Services, a program for
persons infected and affected by
HIV/AIDS.
Jewish Home and Rehabilitation
Center
198 Stevens Avenue
Jersey City, NJ 01305
201-451-9000
Founded in 1915 as the Hebrew Home for Orphans, the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center is now a licensed long-term care facility with 183 beds and 67 affordable housing units for senior citizens.
The facility is non-sectarian, and
offers a wide-range of long-term
rehabilitative care programs,
including an Alzheimer's Day Care
Center, an Adult Medical Day Care
Center, and Dental, Podiatric and
Total Eye Care clinics for the elderly.
One of the most innovative
programs available is the Respite
Care program. Care-givers for the
elderly needing a temporary break
from their
duties can take the needed time off,
knowing that the Center is providing
excellent care for their loved ones.
The Center also serves as a senior
Kosher nutrition site in addition to its
Kosher Meals on Wheels program.
Elderly people can come to the Center
and get their main meal of the day. A
voluntary contribution is requested
